Richfield Township currently contracts with the Village of Richfield’s Fire Department. Funded by a Fire/EMS levy, the current levy is 3.4 mills and generates approximately $483,131.00 each year in revenue.  On February 19, 2015, the Board of Trustees signed a three-year contract with the Village of Richfield.  The 2015 contract amount is $441,951.00.  The 2016 contract amount is $460,734.00 and the 2017 contract amount is $480,315.00.  For the complete contract and agreement, click here for Resolution #04-2015. 

The Richfield Fire Department was established in 1934 as a volunteer fire department and has progressed into a department with year round staffing.

The Fire Department's mission statement reads, “Our mission is to provide the citizens of Richfield, the best possible protection and services through relentless training and continued commitment to excellence.”

Business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  The Station is manned twenty-four (24) hours a day every day of the year. 

A LITTLE HISTORY

In April 2002 the Fire Department moved into the new 20,000 sq. ft building at a cost of $2.1 million. 

Throughout the year members of the Fire Department participate in various segments of fire training.

 OPEN BURNING REGULATIONS

Note: This is NOT a permit to burn. It is for advisory, enforcement & documentation purposes only.

    

Definitions:   

Bonfire:  An outdoor fire used for ceremonial purposes.

Recreation Fire:  An outdoor fire burning only clean, dry firewood in an outdoor fireplace, barbeque grill or barbecue pit and has a total are of 2-feet or less in height and 3-feet in diameter for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth, or similar purposes.  Approved containers are but not limited to:  metal fire rings, commercially manufactured units for open flame type burning, fire pits at least 18-inches deep with stones or fire brick lining the perimeter, and other configurations conforming to the intent of containing the fire safely.

 ALL OPEN BURNING ACTIVITES:

  • Fuel shall consist of only clean seasoned firewood, natural gas or equivalent, or any clean burning fuel with emissions that are equivalent to or lower than those created from the burning of seasoned firewood. 
  • The fire shall not be utilized for waste disposal and fuel shall be chosen to minimize air contaminants.
  • There shall be at least one portable fire extinguisher with a minimum of a 4-A rating or other approved on-site fire extinguishing equipment such as dirt, sand, water barrel, garden hose, or water truck.
  • Provisions shall be made to prevent the spread of fire to any structure or other combustible material.
  • The fire shall not generate objectionable smoke or odors.
  • If an objectionable smoke or odor complaint is generated, the complainant (s) shall be present upon investigation by the Fire Department of such objectionable smoke or odors.  Smoke entering adjacent structures shall be considered objectionable and the fire is to be extinguished.  Other matters of complaint shall be evaluated based on the safety and health of those present and in proximity to the fire.  The fire official investigating the open burning activity shall make all determinations.
  • No open burning shall be conducted where an air alert, warning, or emergency is in effect.
  • The fire shall be constantly attended until the fire is extinguished.

FOR A BONFIRE:

A permit is required from the Fire Department and the Akron Regional Air Quality Management Division of the Ohio EPA (800.589.2480 or 330.375.2480) ten (10) working days before the activity is to take place.

  • The wood stack size shall be no larger than the 5-foot high by 5-foot in diameter and shall not burn longer than 3 hours.
  • The fire must be at least 50-feet from any structure.
  • Provisions shall be made to prevent the spread of fire to within 50-feeet of any structure.

 FOR A RECREATIONAL FIRE:

A permit from the Fire Department is not required, but it is encouraged.

  • The wood stack shall be no larger than 2-feet high by 3-feet in diameter.
  • Fires not contained in an approved container must be at least 25-feet from any structure of combustible material.
  • Fires in approved containers are permitted to be not less than 15-feet from any structure.
